July 4, 14 Comments This is the first time I have written about my relationship on my blog. It is a private part of my life and I checked with my boyfriend, out of courtesy, whether he was happy with me writing about our relationship on here. I feel that I have discussed many other topics on this blog and I feel that covering the topic of Aspergers and relationships would be beneficial to a lot of my readers so the time has come to address this area. My boyfriend and I have been together for almost five years-our anniversary is on Monday. We met at work while both signing a petition against a rent increase in the hostel where we both lived at the time I still live there-he moved out when he left the organisation. Unusually for me, I felt able to speak to him with ease the first time I met him-usually I have to get to know people first to feel comfortable with them. The first evening we met, we spoke for two and a half hours before we went our separate ways. The rest, as they say, is history. Our first date was a couple of days later and we have been together ever since.

Thursday, November 5, Why do Aspies Suddenly Back Off in Relationships Part 2 In part one, we looked at the role that Change Resistance plays in causing aspies to suddenly go “cold” in otherwise good relationships. This time, I want to look at self esteem and depression; Self Esteem The aspie relationship with themselves is tedious at best.
People with Asperger’s commonly suffer from low self esteem. As discussed in earlier posts, this low self esteem often results from years of emotional turmoil resulting from their poor social skills. Aspies are often their own worst enemy. They can over analyze situations and responses in an effort to capture lost nonverbal communication.
I feel very comfortable with dating or being in social situations with others. conduct in relationships, and general success in achieving life goals reveal any of the characteristics that typically are found in people with Asperger’s. Here is a description of the psychiatric conditions most frequently associated with Aspergers.

Aspergers and Relationships
Their intimate life with their loved one in marriage is private. If the relationship also contains heartbreaking secrets and deprivation, then it is harder to mention it to anyone else. The reality of an NT-AS relationship is that there will be many idiosyncrasies.
“I have Asperger’s and have had many relationships,” added another. “Your love life is definitely not over.” A number of commenters were diagnosed with Asperger’s—or were dating.
I’ve addressed this post to readers who have Asperger’s themselves, but these tips can just as easily be used to help a loved one who has Asperger’s. The most important rule I’ve discovered is this: Learn social skills by understanding the reasons behind social situations, not through rote memorization. The Problem With Rote Memorization The most natural way that people with Asperger’s learn social skills is through rote memorization.
We learn a specific response that works for a specific situation, and so when that situation occurs, we deploy that response. For instance, we learn through trial and error that if someone tells us their name, we should tell them our name in return or they will be upset. But if the situation changes, our memorized response doesn’t help us.
Let’s say Bob introduces Joe to us. Do we tell Joe our name, or is that Bob’s job? We memorized what to do in one specific situation, but when the situation changes we are out of luck. Of course, rote memorization is better than nothing. But there’s a better way.
Relationships are all about communication. This adversely affects the important quality of empathy, which is vital to a successful and fulfilling relationship. People involved in relationships with a mindblind partner report feeling invalidated, unsupported, unheard, unknown and uncared for. They suffer from severe, ongoing emotional deprivation that results in depression, loneliness, anger, low self-esteem, emotional breakdown, PTSD and physical illness.
Many study the words and behavior of NT people around them, and copy it. They learn exactly what they should do and say in a romantic relationship, since none of it comes naturally to them.
The difference between interracial and interplanetary relationships is the issues in an interracial relationship are largely external, dealing with people’s stupid oppinions about whether or not the 2 of you should be dating, while the issues in an interplanetary relationship are largely internal, dealing with each others sensory issues.
How would you know? The person may be able to identify basic emotions, such as intense anger, sadness or happiness yet lack an understanding of more subtle expressions of emotions such as confusion, jealousy or worry. A person is diagnosed based on the signs and symptoms he or she has rather than the results of a specific laboratory or other type of test. The assessment process itself is time consuming and it can be costly.

Poor Communication Skills People with Asperger’s find it difficult to communicate their thoughts and emotions. This can make the partner or friend feel distanced, and may inhibit emotional intimacy. Sometimes, aspies will attempt to show genuine care and love, but their monotonous and mechanical tone of voice may not be able to communicate it.
Thus, they may not be able to connect with other people’s interests and understand why they want to talk about their passions.
